2 tons of used surgical gloves found in Cavite apartment

Two persons were arrested for keeping about 2 tons of used surgical gloves at an apartment in Tanza, Cavite, police said.

Arrested were businessman Ernest Latuan, 31, and his helper Marlon Cenizal, 21, according to a report from the Cavite provincial police.

Members of the Tanza Police and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office apprehended the duo around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, at their apartment in Wellington Residences Subdivision, Brgy. Tres Cruses.

SSgt. Jonathan Lagario, investigator of the local police, said they learned of the used surgical gloves being stored there when another resident reported it.

Upon checking, police and members of the MENRO found four apartment units filled with the gloves.

“Mabaho na parang kemikal ang amoy doon, amoy [bleach], pero pagpasok mo makikita mo yung ibang gloves na may dugo-dugo pa,” Lagario told the Daily Tribune.

“Ang inaalaala namin dito, baka ito ay sa COVID [patients] or kung saan pa nagamit, napaka-delikado nito sa community at sa kapaligiran, so hindi na rin kami kumuha,” he said, adding that the MENRO has already ordered the proper disposal of the gloves.

Latuan and Cenizal have yet to specify where they got the used gloves from and where these are headed, but indicated that the items are being “recycled,” Lagario said.

“Wala pa silang definite na sinasabi kundi galing lang daw sa mga relatives lang nila, scrap daw yun na binabagsak sa kanila, tapos nire-recycle at may customer na kumukuha sa kanila,” he said.

Police and the MENRO are conducting further investigation into the matter, Lagario said.
