- P.5-B airport travel, terminal fees of OFWs may be turned over to OWWA—anti-graft body
THE estimated P.5 billion in travel taxes and terminal fees that were allegedly illegally collected from Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) by the Manila International Airport Authority(MIAA) can be transferred to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), according to the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PACC).
“It is not illegal because the money will just be held in trust by OWWA,” PACC Commissioner Manuel Luna told The Manila Times on Wednesday.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello had written a letter to airport authorities to remit the P.5 billion to OWWA, raising questions about its legality as the money collected was considered private fund exclusive for OFWs.
The amount was collected from 2015 to 2017. WILLIAM DEPASUPIL
