Manila creates panel vs ‘hot’ meat

MANILA Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagoso has ordered the city’s Veterinary Inspection Board (VIB) to create an enforcement unit to spearhead the campaign against “hot” meat and double dead meat or botcha.

Domagoso gave the marching orders to Nicanor Santos Jr., who was named chief of the VIB Special Enforcement Squad.

“You are further directed to effect the seizure, confiscation, examination, disposition and disposal of merchandise found to be illegal, and recommend the filing of appropriate cases for prosecution before the proper court in the City of Manila,” Domagoso said.

The enforcement squad will check establishments engaged in the food trade to ensure that their products have undergone proper inspection and quality control procedures by authorized personnel.

Through the enforcement squad, the local government would be able to “sustain a continuing drive” against the illegal sale, manufacturing, processing and distribution of meat products, Domagoso said.

To date, authorities have seized around 3,000 kilograms of mixed hot meat and botcha.
