Six members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed and 15 firearms were seized when government forces clashed with the rebel group in Bukidnon and Agusan del Norte on Monday.
Five rebels were killed when members of the 1st Special Forces Battalion swooped down an NPA lair in the mountainous area of Sitio Cogon Cogon in Brgy. Manalog, Malaybalay City, around 6:45 a.m., according to a report from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division.
Troops were then conducting an operation against leaders and members of several rebel units, including the National Operations Command of Komisyon Mindanao, which reportedly huddled there.
They encountered about 15 rebels believed to be under Headquarters Force Neo and Regional Sentro De Gravidad Compaq, both of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee.
No casualty was reported among the troops, who recovered the slain rebel’s bodies, six AK47 rifles, two M16 rifles, three M653 rifles, a caliber-.45 pistol and various war materiel.
Around 3 PM the same day, troops of the 65th Infantry Battalion and police commandos of the Special Action Force encountered another group of rebels in Barangay. Bugsukan of Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
The firefight lasted for 15 minutes and resulted in the killing of a rebel only identified as “Jimboy” Anduhoyan of Sandatahang Yunit Pampropaganda 21A under Guerrilla Front 21 of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee.
Two M-16 rifles with magazines and an M203 grenade launcher were recovered at the site, the military said.
Maj. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., 4th ID commander, said he expects more rebels to surrender in the coming days, following a series of setbacks that the NPA suffered.
