Albay solon urges drug testing as requirement for 2025 elections

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – Albay Rep. Fernando “Didi” Cabredo filed a House resolution on Tuesday, June 18, urging the Commission on Elections to require all candidates in the 2025 midterm elections to undergo drug testing.

Cabredo’s explanatory note in House Resolution No. 1772 said that the resolution seeks to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process in the Philippines by urging Comelec to mandate drug testing to all the candidates for the 2025 polls.

“The integrity and credibility of the electoral process are essential to upholding the democratic principles of the Philippines. Drug use and abuse can have detrimental effects on the decision-making abilities and behavior of individuals, including candidates for public office,” Cabredo said.

He said that through drug testing, which is a widely accepted method for assessing individual’s drug use, can help identify candidates who maybe unfit to hold public office due to drug related issues.

Cabredo encouraged the Comelec to establish clear guidelines and procedures for the implementation of mandatory drug testing for all candidates to ensure fairness, transparency, and compliance with existing laws and regulations.

“By taking proactive measures to address drug-related concerns among candidates, Comelec can enhance public trust in the electoral system and uphold the principles of democracy and good governance,” he said.
