Ateneo frustrates gritty UE

By NIKOLE JAVIER

Ateneo needed an extra set to dispose of University of the East, 25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-10, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday, March 1.

The Blue Eagles shrugged off a third-set stumble before turning back the Lady Warriors in the fourth.

Vanie Gandler and Faith Nisperos joined forces for a combined 28 points in Ateneo’s first win after suffering a sweep at the hands of defending champion National University last Feb. 25.

Up by two in the third, 24-22, the Blue Eagles couldn’t finish the job as the Lady Warriors saved two match points after going on a 4-0 run to stun the former.

KC Cepada was the lone bright spot for UE with 14 points, while the rest of the team was held to a single-digit finish which didn’t help its cause and fell into a 0-2 hole to start the season.
