Bay Area stint in PBA Commissioner’s Cup in peril

Foreign squad Bay Area's second tour of duty with the PBA's Season 48 may no longer happen after all.

The South China Morning Post, on Friday, September 1, reported that the East Asia Super League has informed the Bay Area squad that contracts of everyone from the team has been terminated already following their online meeting.

The sudden move came as a huge surprise considering that just weeks back, the Dragons formally announced their participation in the PBA's incoming new season, which kicks off on October 15.

The team, which finished a strong second behind eventual Commissioner's Cup champion Barangay Ginebra last season, will have holdovers Hayden Blankely, Kobey Lang, Glen Yang, 7-foot-5 slotman Liu Chuanxing, Zheng Qilong, Duncan Reid Jiu Mingxin and Zhu Songwei coming back.

The Dragons, even announced adding several new faces to the team in time for the PBA's coming season, while they also prepare for the new EASL home-and-away tournament.

But when asked to comment on the disbandment of Bay Area, PBA Commissioner Willy Marcal told the Manila Times they have yet to receive any format announcement from EASL chief executive officer Matt Beyer regarding Bay Area's pullout.

“I'm just waiting for the formal communication from Matt Beyer of EASL. I'm not going to comment on that yet,” Marcial said.
