BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Albee Benitez has canceled the proposed P525-million renovation of the Burgos Public Market here after majority of vendors opposed the project due to livelihood concerns.

The city government has decided to use the budget to fund other projects that will have a big impact for the people of this city.
The budget was part of the P4.4-billion approved loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).
“There are people who do not like change. It’s hard to help those who do not appreciate,” Benitez said.
Benitez said there are several markets where they can pour in the money such as the two other major public markets here – Libertad and Central Market.
“We are also looking at it. I’m getting feelers from other markets that they are willing,” he added.
Benitez earlier said that the money is not just limited to market renovation as they can also transfer the funds to other projects that can benefit the general public.
“Whoever wants it, I’d rather give it to them,” he said.
