The Manila City Jail Male Dormitory (MCJMD) has constructed a special detention facility for members of the LGBTQ+ community in a bid to protect them from potential harm.
Dubbed as the “Dorm Bahaghari’’, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said it now houses 92 LGBTQ+ persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
The facility is located at the south sector of the facility.
MCJMD warden Supt. Lino Soriano said the initiative aims not only to uphold the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ PDL but also to address critical health concerns, such as preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
“The Dorm Bahaghari fosters a strong sense of community among its residents, making them more active participants in various rehabilitation and development programs,” said Soriano.
As part of the transfer process, the MCJMD conducted an orientation to ensure that all PDL understand the objectives and rules of “Oplan Bahaghari.’’
“This marks a significant step in creating an inclusive and safer environment within the jail,’’ Soriano said.
