Brownlee suffers busted lip in Gilas practice

Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player Justin Brownlee suffered a cut on his upper lip during the national squad's' Friday practice at the Meralco gym.

The 6-foot-4 Brownlee shared a photo his busted lip in an Instagram story he posted shortly after practice.

An inadvertent elbow during the team's scrimmage caused the 34-year-old resident Ginebra import to sustain the cut from his lip.

Brownlee will be making his Southeast Asian Games debut as Gilas' naturalized player when the Philippines takes on Malaysia on May 9 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

A lot is expected from the do-it-all Brownlee considering that several key players from the national pool won't be around for various reasons.

Six-team PBA Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo is still recovering an MCL sprain on his knee he suffered during the East Asia Super League Champions Week last March. Jamie Malonzo and Mikey Williams of Ginebra and TNT, respectively also begged off for “personal reasons,” while Scottie Thompson could possibly miss the biennial games also as his wife Jinky is giving birth soon.

Sharp-shooter Roger Pogoy is also out after fracturing his right pinky during the recent Governors' Cup Finals won by TNT.

Gilas Pilipinas is heading to Calamba, Laguna this Sunday to begin its closed-door training camp at Inspire Sports Academy before eventually flying to Phnom Penh on May 6.
