Cabana, Mojdeh seize gold, silver in Malaysia swimfest

Behrouz Elite Swimming Team (BEST) Philippines standouts Yugo Cabana and Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh delivered gold and silver medals in the opening day of the 58th Malaysia Invitational Age Group Swimming Championships on Thursday at the National Aquatic Center inside the Kuala Lumpur Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.

The Lucena City pride Cabana, a high school student at International School for Better Beginnings, pocketed the country's first gold medal by topping the boys' 11-12 200m Individual Medley.

Cabana registered two minutes and 25.02 seconds to secure the top honors, beating Tai Jin Hong of Singapore who settled for silver with 2:27.55.

Cayden Mineve China of host Malaysia took home the bronze (2:28.71) in the tournament that drew more than 700 tankers from different parts of the region.

Also making her presence felt was World Junior Championships semifinalist Mojdeh, who earned the silver medal in the girls' 15-17 200m IM.

Mojdeh, a Brent International School standout, checked in at two minutes and 25.37 seconds to secure the second place honors in the event topped by Rouxin Tan of Malaysia (2:23.37).

Indonesia's Elysha Chloe Pribadi wound up third with 2:26.20.

“We are so proud of these kids for bringing honors to our country. It's just the opening day and we're looking forward to winning more medals in the next three days,” said PH BEST team manager Joan Mojdeh.

Cabana and Mojdeh along with Mohammad Behrouz Mojdeh, Julia Ysabelle Basa, Ruben White, Yuan Parto, Samuel Caguimbal, Sierdon Caguimbal, Ashby Canlas, Peter Dean, Kimberly Estacio, Lleyton Rara, Zahjeed Sarmiento, Nathan Sason, Reinielle Trinidad and Mikail Trinidad gun for medals as the competition resumes today.
