Canada raps China, ends campaign with win

(UPDATE) CANADA took down China in four sets 25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 25-18 to end their 2023 Men's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) campaign with a victory at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, July 9.

Stephen Maar and Ryan Sclater poured 20 points each to lead the Canadians, who picked up their first win in four games in this Philippine leg.

Canada, already eliminated, accumulated a 3-9 overall record in the tournament, good for 13th place. More importantly, Canada avoided being relegated as it secured its participation for next year's VNL edition.

China, also eliminated, fell to 2-10 with six points to finish deadlast at 16th at press time.

The Chinese await the result of the Cuba-Iran game on July 10 and if Cuba wins that contest, China will officially finish last and be relegated from VNL.

Cuba holds a 2-9 record also with six points but is superior to China in set ratio points, 0.387 – 0.366.

Nicholas Hoag and Danny Demyanenko cashed in 12 points for Canada while Luke Herr tossed 18 excellent sets.

Zhang Jingyin uncorked 25 points on 24 attacks and one service ace to pace China while Li Yongzhen backstopped him with 10 points.
