A policeman tagged as the mastermind in the robbery-killing of a company messenger carrying nearly half-a-million pesos of payroll last October 2020 in Valenzuela City died in a brief gunfight with authorities who tried to arrest him on Wednesday night at Lipa City, Batangas.
PLt. Gen. Guillermo Elezar, Philippine National Police officer-in-charge, identified the rogue cop as Anthony Glua Cubos, also known as “Big Boss”.
The suspect is said to be the leader of the notorious Cubos group involved in kidnapping, robbery/extortion, gun-for-hire, and illegal drug activities, in Southern Tagalog, according to a report submitted to Camp Crame by the Police Regional Office 4A (PRO-4A).
Cubos’ name was also included in the PNP’s national-level drug watchlist of pushers and protectors of illegal drug syndicates, the report added.
Local police forces, backed by other PNP units including operatives from Valenzuela City and military intelligence operatives, carried out an operation to arrest Cubos around 6 p.m. in Barangay San Francisco.
They were serving an arrest warrant issued by Hon. Snooky Maria Ana Bareno-Sagayo, presiding Judge Regional Trial Court Branch 283 of Valenzuela City, for the crime of robbery with homicide that resulted to an armed encounter against Cubos when the clash happened.
Cubos, who had gone AWOL (absent without official leave) from service, fired at the arresting personnel after they declared themselves as police officers. The operatives returned fire causing the instantaneous death of the suspect.
The slain suspect was tagged as the brains behind the death of Nino Luegi Hernando, who was robbed by Cubos’ cohorts after he was robbed coming out of a bank on Maysan Road in Valenzuela City while carrying a total of P442,714.00 cash for their company payroll.
Police have already arrested his cohorts Jo-Ann Cabatuan, Edgar Batchar, and Michael Castro, while two others identified as Rico Reyes alias “Moja,” and Narciso Santiago alias “Tukmol” remain at-large.
“The PNP manhunt operations is underway to locate and put behind bars the two remaining suspects of the slay. We assure the family of Mr. Hernando that justice would be served”, Eleazar said.
