Three persons, including a barangay kagawad, were arrested after being caught transporting thousands of bullets, some explosives, and food supplies supposedly for the New People’s Army, at a checkpoint in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, on Friday night, police said.
Among those arrested were Ferdinand Dagium, 27, resident and kagawad of Brgy. Magsaysay in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur, and his brother Rolando Dagium, 34, Caraga regional police Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat said.
Also arrested was Marvin Pepito Merencillo, 26, a resident of Brgy. Mount Ararat, Bayugan City.
All three were identified as couriers of the Sentro de Grabidad under the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee, and have been under surveillance, Caramat said.
Members of the Regional Intelligence Division, Butuan City Police, and the Army’s 65th and 75th Infantry Battalions intercepted the three, who were on motorcycles, at a checkpoint in Purok 1B, Brgy. Pianing, around 8:10 p.m.
The checkpoint was put up following reports that NPA members were carrying out some movement in the area, Caramat said.
The Dagiums and Merencillo tried to evade arrest but were eventually cornered, he said.
Operatives seized 4,800 rounds of caliber-7.62 ammunition for AK-47 rifles, two rifle grenades, and assorted food items from the trio, as well as their motorcycles.
Charges for violation of the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition and illegal possession of explosives are being prepared against the suspects.
