Dos and don’ts for 2024

MANILA, Philippines — For a very special occasion like welcoming a new year, people have a lot to say about what one must or must not do so as to attract good vibes and repel bad ones.

Through the years, they have become “dos and don’ts” and “musts and must-nots” to live by (or play along with).

Here are some of them:

  • · Turn on all the lights in the house when you are about to welcome the New Year.
  • · Put money inside your cash box and your wallet.
  • · Do not loan out any money on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.
  • · Open doors at a little before midnight to let the old year out and the New Year in. Shortly after midnight, you can already close the door. The task has been done.
  • · Serve noodles for Media Noche. Noodles, particularly spaghetti, bihon, and miki, symbolize long life. Don’t cut them when you eat them.
  • · Wear polka dots. The round shape represents coins or money.
  • · Wear red. The color symbolizes wealth and good luck. And since violet is the color of 2024, it should be good to wear a violet outfit, too, if red does not happen to be your favorite.
  • · Make noise to shoo away evil spirits. But there’s no need to light firecrackers to create loud noise. You can bang on tin cans, for one.
  • · Fill up you rice, salt, and sugar containers. Full containers symbolize prosperity.
  • · Clean up the house. Declutter. But do this days before, not as you wait for 12 midnight to strike. Remove the “dirt” from your life and things will be lighter as you welcome 2024.
  • · Fix up things in the house. Take care of a leaky faucet, place a defective light bulb, the main door has to be working properly.
  • · To make sure there is no negativity when you usher in the New Year, make amends with friends with whom you’ve had a falling out.
  • · Eat 12 grapes at midnight for good luck—one grape for each month. Or skewer them up and serve with a fun cocktail drink. This practice has Spanish roots.
  • · Do not cry on New Year’s Day so you won’t find reasons to cry throughout the year.
