Duterte gets ‘high’ 70% approval rating: survey

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte’s approval and trust ratings soared in December 2020, according to a PAHAYAG end-of-the year survey conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc.

In the PAHAYAG survey, Duterte registered an overall approval rating of 70 percent, an improvement from his 65 percent score in the survey conducted last August. Meanwhile, his disapproval rating was at 16 percent.

He also acquired a “high trust” rating of 62 percent, seven points higher than his 55 percent score last August. Only 16 percent said they had “low trust” in Duterte.

Duterte also registered the highest shares of all the traits measured.

His top traits include has love for the Philippines, has concern for Filipinos, responsible, pro-poor and sincere/authentic.

Meanwhile, Vice President Robredo registered the highest disapproval rating of 34 percent, which is line with her score last August. Thirty-five percent said they approved of Robredo’s performance.

Robredo also registered the highest “low trust” rating at 42 percent while 23 percent had “high trust” in her.

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III recorded an increase in his overall approval rating from 39 percent last August to 47 percent in this end-of-the year survey giving him the biggest improvement among the top 5 leaders. Only 18 percent disapproved of Sotto’s performance.

Sotto also recorded an increase in his total high trust rating from 22 percent last August to 30 percent in this end-of-the-year poll.

House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, who has been the lower chamber’s top official for less than three months, registered a 30 percent approval rating and a 23 percent disapproval rating.

Only 18 percent said they had “high trust” in Velasco, while 30 percent said they had “low trust”.

Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta recorded a 31 percent approval rating and a 17 percent disapproval rating.

As for trust, 19 percent said they had “high trust” in Peralta while 27 percent said they had “low trust”.

Among lawmakers, Senator Manny Pacquiao remained at the top among senators in terms of approval rating at 70 percent.

He also remains the most trusted senator with a total high trust rating of 58 percent despite registering a decrease from his survey score of 63 percent last August.

The PAHAYAG survey, conducted from Dec. 3-9, comprised of 1500 respondents drawn from a research panel of approximately 100,000 Filipinos maintained by a Singapore-based firm.

The survey research panel was restricted to registered voters.

Parameters based on respondent age and location were also considered in the sample formulation in order for the resulting sample to conform more closely to the features of the voting population as defined by statistics from the Commission on Elections. (PNA)
