MANILA, Philippines — What a difference two weeks can make for Alex Eala.

In a span of just 14 days, the young Filipina tennis star transformed from a promising contender into a formidable presence on one of tennis’ biggest stages. Her latest statement came with a stunning victory over World No. 4 Coco Gauff, 6-2, 2-0 (ret.), in the third round of the prestigious Indian Wells Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California Sunday (Monday Manila time).

The result sent the 20-year-old into the Round of 16 for the first time in her career at the tournament widely considered the “fifth Grand Slam”, marking another milestone in her steady climb in the world of women’s professional tennis.

The victory also served as redemption. Just weeks earlier, Gauff had overwhelmed Eala, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships. This time, however, the Filipina, ranked No. 32 in the world, returned to the court armed with a vastly improved game and unshakable composure.

From the opening rally, Eala dictated the tempo.

In a first set filled with service breaks, she emerged dominant, breaking Gauff three times in the first five games. With sharper serves, a disciplined baseline play, and well-placed shots that forced the American star to scramble, Eala looked every bit the rising force that tennis insiders have long predicted.

Her numbers reflected her control. Eala delivered an impressive 96% first-serve rate and converted five of six break points, all while committing no double faults. In contrast, Gauff struggled with consistency, committing seven double faults before retiring early in the second set due to a nagging left arm issue.

Even so, the Filipina’s performance left little doubt about the direction the match was heading.

The 54-minute victory was a testament to Eala’s steady growth.

Just two days earlier, she battled past Dayana Yastremska in a grueling three-set encounter, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. That match tested her resilience and mental toughness. Against Gauff, she showed a different dimension — fire, precision, composure and the ability to seize the biggest moments.

It was the kind of performance that suggests Eala is no longer just a future prospect but an emerging threat on the WTA Tour.

Yet despite the breakthrough, she continues to display the humility that has defined her journey.

“I do my best to stay humble and keep my feet on the ground,” said Eala after the match. “I’m surrounded by so many amazing players and tennis is a very humbling sport because you learn how to lose and be self-aware.”

Her grounded outlook reflects the long process that has shaped her development — from a junior standout to a professional competing against the world’s best.

Eala’s maturity was also evident in how she responded to her opponent’s injury.

Moments after Gauff rushed to the net in discomfort, Eala crossed the court to check on her rival at the sideline. Later, during her post-match speech, she expressed sincere concern for the American star.

“I hope everything is well and that you recover soon,” she told Gauff, drawing applause from the crowd.

On a day that coincided with International Women's Day, Eala also took a moment to acknowledge the women who inspired her, including her mom Rizza.

“I thank all the incredible women who have paved the way and advocated for themselves and other women,” she said. “Coco is one of them — an amazing competitor and role model.”

She also addressed her growing base of supporters.

“Maraming salamat sa suporta at magkita tayo sa next round,” she said, thanking the fans in Filipino.

Eala’s reward is a Round-of-16 showdown with Czech standout Linda Noskova, the tournament’s 14th seed on Wednesday.

The stakes are higher now.

A victory would propel Eala into the quarterfinals of one of tennis’ most prestigious tournaments, further cementing her place among the sport’s rising stars.

But with every breakthrough comes greater expectations.

The Filipina carries not only the hopes of her country but also the growing attention of the tennis world. The challenge will be maintaining the poise and focus that have fueled her run while navigating the pressure that accompanies success.

For now, Eala appears ready.

“I really didn’t want to win this way,” she said of Gauff’s retirement. “But it’s still a really big moment for me to play on one of the Indian Wells stages. I’m very grateful to be here and super happy.”

If her performance so far is any indication, this breakthrough may be just the beginning of a much bigger story.
