PALO, Leyte – Eastern Visayas on Wednesday recorded 244 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the highest number of cases in a single day in the region since the start of the pandemic.
The Department of Health (DOH) regional office said a one-month baby boy from Sta. Rita, Samar died of the virus last 19 December.
According to the DOH, most of the cases were in urban centers or provincial capital of the provinces in the region as more people are converging doing last-minute shopping before Christmas.
Based on the latest data, 244 new cases came from the 1,472 laboratory samples tested in the three COVID-19 laboratories in the region, the Eastern Visayas Regional COVID-19 Testing Center, Divine Word Hospital Virology Laboratory and the Ormoc Molecular Diagnostic Center.
The positivity rate was recorded at 16.58 percent, which is more than thrice the five percent benchmark set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Samar has 56 new cases followed by Eastern Samar with 53; Leyte with 44; Tacloban City, 35; Biliran, 20; Northern Samar, 17; Southern Leyte, 16; and Ormoc City, three.
Among provincial capital, Catbalogan City recorded 29 new cases; Maasin City, eight; Borongan City, 14; and Naval, 16.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in Eastern Visayas reached 10,456, with 9,463 (90.50 percent) recoveries, and 118 (1.3 percent) deaths. There are at least 875 (8.37 percent) active cases.
