During the event, Mars Pet Nutrition Philippines Scientific Communication Manager, Dr. Saza Curaming explained that gum disease begins when bacteria sticks to the surface of the dog's teeth. The bacteria forms an off-white, sticky layer called dental plaque which can harden and turn into tartar if not removed. If a dog has brown, rough deposits on their teeth, that's tartar. In time, both plaque and tartar can cause inflammation of the gums. This is called periodontal disease.

She also touched on the risks involving periodontal disease (PD). For one, it's linked to the inflammation of the kidney and heart tissue. The bacteria associated with PD can also spread to the heart and lungs, where it can create more problems. Lastly, geriatric dogs with severe PD suffer more from cardiac diseases compared to geriatric dogs without PD.

Dr. Saza mentioned how DentaStix is an effective oral care solution. It was designed to fit with any dog's oral structure, and made with STPP and Zinc Sulfate, both of which inhibit the accumulation of plaque and tartar.
