MANILA, Philippines —Since 2003, Thailand has ruled the women’s beach volleyball event of the Southeast Asian Games.
The country has won all eight previous editions of the event.
With the 2025 SEA Games being held in Thailand, the home country is still the favorite to bag the gold.
But the Philippines has other plans.
The quartet of Sisi Rondina, Bernadeth Pons, Dij Rodriguez and Sunnie Villapando will be bringing home historic gold medals after beating Thailand in two games Friday at the Sport Arena Jomtien Beach in Chonburi.
Rondina and Pons defeated the duo of Kongphopsarutawadee Worapeerachayakorn and Naraphornrapat Taravadee in the first game, 21-17, 21-15, before Rodriguez and Villapando sealed the championship for Alas with a three-set victory over Tanarattha Udomchavee and Rumpaipruet Numwong, 21-13, 17-21, 15-6.
After Rondina and Pons won the first set, Worapeerachayakorn and Taravadee jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second frame.
Alas, though, clawed out of the hole.
The set was tied at 10-all, before Pons and Rondina left their opponents behind.
Worapeerachayakorn tried to spark the comeback, but the opposing duo was just too good.
A kill by Rondina and a block by Pons gave Alas the first game.
After bagging the first set with ease, Udomchavee and Numwong forced the third set, 21-17.
But in the final period, Rodriguez and Villapando connived with a barrage of shots to grab the historic victory.
Rondina, Rodriguez and Pons previously won bronze medals in the 2019 and 2021 editions of the biennial sports meet.
