Filipino booters shine in Indonesia

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino squads were crowned division champions in the Bali7s youth football tournament in Indonesia.

The Ateneo Varsity Born 2016 team ruled the silver cluster of Bali 7s Football Tournament’s U10 age group in Indonesia, while Beach Hut Football Club ruled the U16 girls’ division.

The Eaglets had a rough performance in the group stage, but was able to climb through the knockout stages of the silver cluster, where they did not yield a single goal against their opponents.

After going through Indonesian teams in the knockout stage, Ateneo faced Football Future Pro U10 Team 3, a squad from Austalia, for the championship.

The two were kept in a deadlock before Diego Tagarda connected on a penalty shot to the left corner of the goal to put the Eaglets on the board, 1-0.

Ateneo, then, played on the defensive as they staved off the rally of the Australian team to the final whistle.

In the knockout stage, Ateneo defeated SSB Mectron 2000 B, 2-0, before taking down Samba Football, 2-0.

Ateneo fended off SSB Bina Taruna Samawa in the quarterfinal, 3-0, before dispatching eventual bronze medalists Diponegoro United, 2-0, in the semis.

The team, coached by Mark Maravilla and B2013 varsity football captain Miguel Tagarda, is composed of championship hero Tagarda, Sandro Abadilla, Knox Angeles, Lucas Bulalacao, Luc Lopez, Marco Macaraig, Paco Molina, Andres Prieto, Calvin San Diego, Arby Soller and Jacob Turla.

In the same tournament, another Filipino squad brought home the championship, as Beach Hut FC ruled the U16 girls’ division.

The team took down LH Bali – Putri Srikandi, 1-0, in the final.

Beach Hut finished the group stage with a 2-0-2 win-loss-draw slate, beating Bali Bulldogs, 4-0 before tying with LH Bali – Putri Srikandi, 1-1 and Garuda Muda Bali, 0-0.

The squad then demolished BUFA Putri Tridatu, 8-0 to round up the group stage.

Beach Hut defeated Bufa Dewi Serdadu, 2-0, to earn the championship matchup with LH Bali – Putri Srikandi.

The team is made up of Santi Balajadia, Venise Favis, Katia Mariana del Rosario, Richelle Matondo, Junahlyn Cuerpo, Azriella Thylla Casero, Sofhia Muros, Baasha Rowan Aurelio, Sofia Arago, Feona Maquinay, Vianna Favis and Sabrina Sayat. Joyce Landagan and Josephine Loren coached the team.
