To complete our Korean fever dream, may it be with K-Pop idols or binge-worthy K-Dramas, it’s also a must to try out their food. Exploding with flavors and flair, Korean food is known for its spicy and tangy flavor profiles. Among dishes that possess those qualities is the staple side dish, kimchi.

With a spicy kick and pungent smell, kimchi is made from fermented napa cabbage, radish and other vegetables. Spiced with salt, vinegar, garlic, ginger and gochugaru or chili peppers, kimchi is commonly served alongside noodles, rice and soups. Why do we love kimchi? It not only adds a kick to one’s meal, but also delivers a number of health benefits.

Eating kimchi is said to improve metabolism and digestion. When being prepared, kimchi undergoes fermentation. It contains healthy bacteria known as lactobacilli, which is responsible for aiding digestion. Aside from that, kimchi also has probiotics that can combat infections.

Ever wonder why your favorite K-Pop idols have radiant skin? Aside from their meticulous skincare routines, brighter skin is achieved through their diet, which includes kimchi. Eating kimchi leads to cell oxidation, which relaxes the skin. Kimchi also contains selenium, glutathione and vitamin C. Even the spices, such as the garlic, help decrease the wrinkles on your face.

Aside from adding spice to your dishes, kimchi can also spice up your life, as it is rich in vitamin A, which helps in getting rid of the cancer-causing free radicals in your body. Not only that, vitamin A can also improve your eyesight!
