MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas bowed out of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup after falling to Korea in the men’s quarterfinal round, 18-15, Sunday in Singapore.
Jerrick Ahanmisi carried the offensive load with eight points, all from 2-point territory. Sean Alter and Chris Koon had three points apiece, while Ralph Cu had a point on a 1-of-9 clip.
Donggeun Lee top-scored for the Koreans with eight points. Juyeong Lee had five points, while MIngyo Ku and Seungwoo Kim had four and one, respectively.
Korea had a hot start, going up 4-0 as the Lees and Ku teamed up.
Koon put Gilas on the board with a 2-pointer, as the Philippines tied things up at 7-all and 9-all.
The Philippines was able to keep in step with their opponents, as they trailed by just one, 15-16, after a 2-pointer by Ahanmisi.
But a Ku point, followed by a Lee layup, put the game out of reach as Gilas ran out of time.
Despite the quarterfinal exit, Gilas managed to have its best finish in four years.
After a fourth-placed finish in 2022, Gilas ended up 10th and 11th in 2023 and 2024, before failing to make the pool stages last year.
The Final Four of the men’s action are Japan, New Zealand, China and South Korea.
The first two are facing off against each other in the semifinals, while the latter two will battle it out for a spot in the championship round.
In the women’s action, Gilas will be taking on Japan in the semifinals.
The Filipina dribblers defeated Mongolia, 15-12, with Kacey dela Rosa leading with six points and six rebounds.
Whoever wins between Gilas and Japan will take on either China or defending champion Australia in the title round.
