MANILA, Philippines — Emerging pop artist Jed Steven Cunanan, grandson of the founder Gonzalo Ong Sr., brought in his creative vision transforming Golden Pine Hotel into a pop hub in Baguio City.
A certified International Baccalaureate Higher Level Visual Artist from Brent International School Baguio and a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Fine Arts major in Painting, Jed has long been known for his passion for DC, Marvel and Lego. His collection of comics, Blu-ray movies, toys, and novelties is vast and meticulously preserved, reflecting a lifelong fascination with superheroes and pop culture.
For Cunanan, these icons were not just entertainment but formative influences, shaping his identity and artistic journey. His 2019 IB solo exhibition expressed this connection.
“I grew up with DC Comics superheroes. They were part of my childhood, and I watched them change over time — just as I did. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today,” he said.
With this passion, Cunanan conceptualized the transformation of Golden Pine Hotel into a themed hotel, a one-of-a-kind destination in Baguio. The result is 38 uniquely designed rooms, each inspired by beloved worlds — from Marvel and DC superheroes to Disney Princesses, Pixar favorites, and even modern pop icons like BTS and Blackpink.
Local artists were brought in to collaborate on the designs, with Cunanan personally painting and adding finishing touches to some rooms. The hotel also houses the Super Heroverse Café, a dining space where guests can enjoy Filipino, American, and Chinese cuisine while surrounded by his collections of LEGO builds, Funko Pops, and mugs from around the world.
For events, the hotel offers The Grand Ballroom, capable of hosting up to 300 guests, making it an ideal venue for weddings, celebrations and conventions.
While Golden Pine Themed Hotel appeals to travelers who seek a playful, colorful, and immersive stay, Paragon Hotel and Suites offers a more refined and elegant experience. With its 30 distinct rooms and suites, each carefully furnished with modern accessories, the hotel provides a luxurious yet comfortable retreat after a day of touring the city.
Guests can enjoy hearty meals at the Fortune (Hong Kong) Seafood Restaurant, known for its authentic flavors and legacy of hospitality. Inside the hotel, Cunanan's artistry continues to leave its mark, as the lobby doubles as a gallery, showcasing some of his artworks and curated collections — bridging the worlds of hospitality and art.
Together, Golden Pine Themed Hotel and Paragon Hotel and Suites represent more than just places to stay. They embody a family’s story — from Gonzalo Ong Sr.’s pioneering vision in 1999 to his grandson Jed’s creative reinvention two decades later.
