Here’s What the Kids of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” Look Like as Grownups

So it was recently announced that Timothée Chalamet will be playing the chocolatier Willy Wonka in an upcoming origin story. Wonka is set to follow the inventor before opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory. The movie is set to be a movie musical with lots of song and dance numbers so we’re looking forward to see how this one will turn out.

If you’re a ’90s kid, chances are, you’ve seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The 2005 movie is based on the Roald Dahl classic and follows the five lucky kids who spend the day at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Wonka was played by Johnny Depp. This is the second movie adaptation following the first one released in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as Wonka.

So when we heard that Chalamet will be playing a young Wonka, we wondered: what are the kids of the 2005 movie doing now?

Let’s investigate. Contains spoilers.

Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket

Character: Charlie Bucket is the star of the story and visits the factory with his Grandpa Joe. He is kindhearted and selfless, and comes from a humble family.

Freddie Highmore today: Highmore has been active in showbiz since the film, starring in movies such as The Golden Compass, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Astro Boy. He’s found a lot of success in TV shows, playing leading roles in The Bates Motel and The Good Doctor.

Julia Winter as Veruca Salt

Character: Veruca Salt is the spoiled rich girl who found a ticket because her father, who owns a nut factory, ordered his workers to open boxes of chocolate bars. I was today years old when I found out that veruca is a type of wart found on feet (which Wonka actually says in the movie but I was young, okay, I didn’t get it). She fell down a trash chute because she became greedy and wanted a squirrel that can open nuts.

Julia Winter today: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Winter’s first and last professional role. According to The Sun in 2016, “the former child star disappeared off the radar and shunned social media.” Good news, though, she’s said to be best friends with AnnaSophia Robb, who played Violet Beauregard.

AnnaSophia Robb as Violet Beauregard

Character: Violet is a gum-obsessed girl who has been chewing the same piece for the past three months. She turned into a giant blueberry after trying chewing gum in its experimental stages, even when Wonka tries to stop her.

AnnaSophia Robb today: Robb has also found success in Hollywood post-Charlie. She was in Bridge to Terabithia and Race to Witch Mountain. On TV, she played a young Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City prequel, The Carrie Diaries.

Philip Wiegratz as Augustus Gloop

Character: Augustus is a heavy boy who loves to eat. He is the first kid to leave the factory when he falls down the Chocolate River and is sent up a pipe leading to the fudge room.

Philip Wiegratz today: Wiegratz continued his acting career in his native Germany, where he starred in Es ist ein Elch entsprungen,Die Wilden Hühner, Lore, and Ruby Red. His last acting credit was in 2013 and he found work as a software development engineer.
