MANILA, Philippines — Rico Hoey and David Lipsky faltered in the alternate-shot format on Friday (Saturday Manila time), settling for a 71 as the early frontrunners maintained their momentum midway through the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana.
Just five strokes off the lead after Thursday’s four-ball fireworks, Hoey and Lipsky were unable to replicate the same rhythm and chemistry in foursomes play. The tandem managed only three birdies against two bogeys for a 34-37 round, a noticeable dip from their opening 63 under the best-ball format that had put them firmly in contention.
At 10-under 134, the ICTSI-backed Hoey and Lipsky slid from joint 16th to a share of 26th, dropping 10 spots on the leaderboard. They now trail leaders Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer by six shots after the American duo combined for a steady 70 to reach 128.
Despite the stumble, Hoey and Lipsky remain within striking distance heading into Moving Day, when the tournament returns to the more forgiving four-ball format – a setup that better suits their aggressive style of play.
Smalley and Springer, however, face mounting pressure at the top. Hot on their heels are brothers Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Fitzpatrick, who surged into contention with a sizzling 65 in alternate shot, showcasing the cohesion required in the demanding format. They share second place at 129 with the teams of Billy Horschel and Tom Hoge, as well as Davis Thompson and Austin Eckroat, who posted rounds of 68 and 70, respectively.
With several other teams lurking just one or two strokes back, the stage is set for a tightly contested and unpredictable weekend. As the only team event on the PGA Tour calendar, the Zurich Classic continues to deliver a unique blend of strategy, chemistry and high-stakes drama – qualities that should make Saturday’s round pivotal in shaping the title chase.
