Does counting sheep really work to get on with the Zzz's? According to a very informative event at the mammoth Ikea Philippines, the answer is uncertain.
Inviting Himbing.phfounder and sleep coach Ria Lopez to address different sleep problems, the expert — with the help of specialized Ikea products — suggests putting counting sheep aside for the meantime and gearing up on other aids.
“Our sleep affects everything: our overall physical health, our mental health, and just all of our functioning,” said Lopez. “Did you know that if you just slept the seven hours every day in a year, you could easily lose 14 pounds without effort? That's the power of good, quality sleep.
Given the reign of the bedroom area at Ikea, at least for the evening's event, Lopez shares her top picks from the store that she guarantees will “Make Sleep Count.”
Besides making sure your room temperature is cool, your sheets are crisp and clean, you're showered from head to toe, and you've placed your cell phone as far away from your bed as possible, Lopez suggests using blackout curtains to further set the shut-eye mood.
“Darkness is key. Darkness signals your body to release melatonin,” Lopez explained, showing off a pair Hilleborg Blackout Curtains that block out the harshest sunlight.
Choosing a bedside lamp that has dimmable settings is also a good idea to gradually get one to relax. “Ikea has the Tarnaby Table light that does the trick or the Skottorp lampshade and Skaffet base duo,” Lopez noted.
The right pillow — that is an ergonomic one — is critical to quality sleep. Ikea's Kulbbspore pillow goes a step further from using memory foam to relieve pressure and tension in the neck and shoulders and lines the other side with gel to keep you cool through the night.
Finally, “personalized support from a mattress that follows your movements and molds to the contours of your body” wraps up Lopez's list in grand style. “If you choose the proper mattress for the kind of sleeper you are, you'll be sure to get a good base for quality sleep and better health,” she added.
At Ikea, there are three different mattress technologies to consider. Tha Vasdo spring mattress has Bonnell springs that provide stable and even support, giving you the feeling that you're sleeping on top of the bed rather than in it.
The ValeVag pocket spring mattress is extra firm at 9.5 inches high. Propped up by individual pocket springs, the even distribution of body weight by comfort zones is made possible through the night. Get support where you need it, be it the hips or shoulders.
The third and final choice is the Asvang foam mattress — a simple, firm foam bed that is 12 cm high. This is best for the back sleeper as firm mattresses allow full body support and comfort.
“There are so many other things here that can aid in better sleep, but as a rule of thumb, make sure what you buy are the things that can make your room a sanctuary for sleeping, set up just the way you like it,” Lopez ended.
