Following the resignation of several key officials ahead of his takeover, a group of education workers on Tuesday, July 16, urged Senator and incoming Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara to take careful consideration of the individuals he will work with.
“We strongly advise the incoming DepEd Secretary Sen. Angara against repeating the previous administration’s errors by appointing individuals, such as retired military generals, who lack the necessary background and commitment to education,” the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines said.
The group made this call after five high-ranking DepEd officials tendered their resignation before the turnover ceremony scheduled for July 18.
DepEd confirmed the attendance of Vice President and outgoing Education Secretary Sara Duterte during the turnover rites.

“The recent resignations give the new DepEd secretary the opportunity to form his own team that is genuinely committed to addressing the pressing issues and concerns of the education sector,” the group added.
DepEd earlier confirmed the resignation of two undersecretaries and three assistant secretaries. These include Michael T. Poa – Spokesperson, Undersecretary, and Chief of Staff; Nolasco A. Mempin – Undersecretary for Administration; Sunshine A. Fajarda – Assistant Secretary – Office of the Secretary; Reynold S. Munsayac – Assistant Secretary for Procurement; and Noel T. Baluyan – Assistant Secretary for Administration.
