Do you dare enter a journey of spice like you’ve never felt before? Once touted by the Guinness World Records as the world’s hottest chili in 1999, the habanero chili stands at a whopping 100,000 to 350,000 on the Scoville scale. For reference, the local siling labuyo is rated at around 80,000 to 100,000 and the familiar jalapeño at only 4,000 to 8,500 units. Safe to say, it’s a step higher than what the average Filipino is likely used to. That’s not stopping this Quezon City bar from incorporating it into its menu.
Nestled within the lively Cubao Expo, Habanero Kitchen Bar is a go-to favorite for spice lovers. Getting a seat might take some time if you’re coming as a large group. We recommend having a table reserved as early as you can, as the bar fills up fast with its loyal patrons. Dine al fresco and have a loud, joyous time with your friends or opt for the second floor, an intimate space for those who prefer a quieter experience.
On the menu, the reigning champion for bar chow is the Lechon Habanero. It’s a whopping serving of one kilo of pork belly. Crisp on the skin and soft from the remainder, it’s a dish that leaves you stuffed with delight. It’s served alongside the standard soy sauce, garlic, chili, and onion mix and buro (fermented rice with shrimp). You could order the level two spicy version if you’re looking for that heated kick.
Other favorites of patrons include the Oyster Sisig and the Three-Cheese Pizza. Digging into the Oyster Sisig, we couldn’t even differentiate the flavor from the standard pork sisig. Served nice and smoky, it’s a wonderful new take on the iconic pulutan dish. For the three-cheese pizza, it’s a rich blend of cheeses that are complemented by the habanero hot sauce it comes with. Just the right mix of cheesiness and spiciness to make an unforgettable pizza experience.
Of course, visiting the Habanero Kitchen Bar wouldn’t be complete without trying out its habanero-infused drinks. For those who prefer a strong kick, look no further than the Habanero Vodka. What a one-two punch it had, mostly from the strong flavors of the vodka being followed up by the spiciness of the chili flavor infused in it. There are also a number of shots infused with chilis patrons can opt for that can heat you up in no time.
Habanero Kitchen Bar is located at Cubao Expo, Quezon City.
