Senator Christopher “Bong” Go provided assistance to affected communities in Metro Manila that were hit by recent fire incidents.
Go’s team distributed relief and addressed immediate concerns of residents whose houses and livelihoods were damaged by fire.
Go’s team provided financial assistance, food packs and meals to a total of 36 families during the relief activities separately conducted at the local gym in Barangay 892, Manila City and Millama Compound in Brgy. Bayanan, Muntinlupa City, both on Tuesday, 9March.
The team also gave away vitamins, masks and face shields to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the communities. Selected beneficiaries were also given new shoes or bicycles for their commuting needs. Meanwhile, others were provided computer tablets so their children can better access educational materials while studying at home.
A committed advocate of fire safety and prevention, Go authored and co-sponsored Senate Bill No. 1832 which seeks to improve the emergency response capabilities of the Bureau of Fire Protection and introduce proactive measures to reduce risks of fires from breaking out.
The bill specifically directs the BFP to implement a modernization program to facilitate the acquisition of modern fire equipment, expansion of the Bureau’s manpower, and provision of specialized training for firefighters. It also seeks to establish Fire Protection Services and mandates monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in every local government unit.
The Senate, in a unanimous vote, passed on the third and final reading SBN 1832 last Monday, 8 March.
Go also offered to assist those suffering from fire-related injuries or other health concerns. He urged others in need of medical assistance to visit the nearest Malasakit Centers located at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila and Ospital ng Parañaque in Parañaque City.
The center streamlines the process of acquiring medical assistance from the relevant government agencies, namely, the Department of Health (DoH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).
Talagang marami silang nagawa ni President [Rodrigo] Duterte para natulungan kaming mahihirap, kaming mga walang-wala ngayon,” said Lolita Ramos, one of affected residents in Brgy. Bayanan.
As part of the holistic set of interventions by the national government for individuals in crisis situations, personnel from the National Housing Authority were also present to assess homeowners in need of aid to repair or restore their homes.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) conducted an assessment of beneficiaries who require livelihood support to help restore their means of income generation.
On the other hand, the DSWD provided each beneficiary with separate cash assistance while the PCSO distributed additional food packs in Barangay 892.
Go expressed his appreciation for the barangay officials led by 892 Punong Barangay Sonia Manzano and Bayanan Punong Barangay Adora San Pedro for continuing to extend support and aid to their constituents despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
