Senator Christopher “Bong” Go provided assistance to 14 families from the Cordilleras who were forced to leave their homes after fire broke out separately in several places.
The fire victims were provided with vitamins, masks and face shields so they can protect themselves from COVID-19. The beneficiaries were also given meals, food packs and financial assistance during a distribution activity held at the Department of Social Welfare and Development Training Center in Baguio City on Thursday, 11 March.
These beneficiaries came from the provinces of Abra and Ifugao, and the municipalities of La Trinidad, Atok, and Kabayan and Baguio City in Benguet.
Selected beneficiaries were given new pairs of shoes, while some of those facing difficulties commuting to work received bicycles. Others were provided tablets so their children can better study at home under the blended learning set-up implemented by schools.
Janeth Gonzaga, a 52-year-old single parent and one of the recipients, expressed in an interview her gratitude for the assistance given by the Senator.
“Kay Senator Bong Go, nagpapasalamat po ako ng marami sa tulong niya sa amin, na di namin inaasahan. At kay President Duterte, napakalaking tulong itong naibigay niyo sa amin sa pangyayari sa buhay namin sa ngayon, kaya maraming, maraming salamat po mula sa aming puso,” Gonzaga said.
As chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Go assured that poor and vulnerable sectors will be prioritized after the frontliners are vaccinated as the country has already received initial batches of vaccines from China and the COVAX facility.
“Huwag ho kayong mag-alala, mayro’n na hong bakunang dumarating. Unti-unti, inuuna lang po ang mga frontliners. Susunod naman po ‘yung mahihirap nating kababayan para unti-unti na tayong makabalik sa normal nating pamumuhay,” he said.
He also offered to assist those in need of medical care. He informed residents that they can also conveniently avail of medical assistance from government through the Malasakit Centers at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center in Baguio City, Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad and Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center in Luna, Apayao.
Representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) distributed additional financial assistance to the fire victims.
Go went on to recognize the local public officials in the Cordilleras for their service to their communities, particularly Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
He assured the public that aside from fulfilling his duties as a legislator and his commitment to support President Rodrigo Duterte, he will also continuously respond to the needs of ordinary Filipinos, especially those in distress and victims of various crisis situations.
Go also highlighted in his message to the beneficiaries that the month of March is Fire Prevention month. He said that Filipinos must continue to exercise caution and remain vigilant in order to prevent such fire incidents.
“Tulung-tulong lang po tayo. Ingat tayo mga kababayan ko dahil ngayon pong buwang ito ay Fire Prevention Month po. Ingat tayo at marami pong sunog na nangyayari. Tandaan, a life lost is a life lost forever,” Go said.
Go principally authored Senate Bill No. 1832 which mandates the Bureau of Fire Protection to develop and implement a fire protection modernization program. This will include the acquisition of modern fire equipment, an expansion of the BFP’s manpower, and the provision of specialized training for firefighters, among others.
The BFP shall also be mandated to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in every local government unit, especially in informal settlements, economically depressed areas, and far-flung communities.
SBN 1832 was passed on the third and final reading on Monday, March 8.
“Tandaan natin, minsan lang tayo dadaan sa mundong ito. Kung ano pong kabutihan o tulong na puwede nating gawin sa ating kapwa tao, gawin na po natin ngayon dahil hindi na po tayo babalik sa mundong ito. Kami ni Pangulong Duterte, patuloy kaming magseserbisyo sa inyo. Dahil para sa amin, ang serbisyo po sa tao ay serbisyo po ‘yan sa Diyos.,” Go added.
On same day also, Go also provided assistance to the professional boxers in Benguet identified by the Games and Amusement Board.
