Lady Tamaraws rebound, down Lady Falcons

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University returned to the win column of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tourney after charging through the Adamson Lady Falcons, 22-25, 30-28, 25-17, 25-20, Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Tamaraws, who dropped a heartbreaking five-set loss against defending champions National University the last time around, lost the first set but bagged the next three to secure the win.

Faida Bakanke powered FEU with 22 points on 17 attacks and five blocks, while Aly Devosora had 18 markers to go with 15 receptions and seven digs. Jaz Ellarina chipped in 11 points, with Tin Ubaldo tossing up 15 excellent sets along with seven markers.

After a hard-fought 30-28 second set, FEU trampled to an easy third set win.

And in the fourth frame, the Lady Tamaraws had to fight back against Shai Nitura’s brilliance.

A kill by Nitura inched Adamson to within three, 18-21.

Lovely Lopez then answered back with a point of her own, but Nitura’s push found the line.

An attack by Lopez followed by a service ace by Ubaldo gave FEU the match point, 24-19.

Nitura tried to force the Lady Falcons back into it with an off-the-block attack, but Lopez iced the match.

Gerz Petallo backstopped FEU with 10 points.

Nitura paced Adamson with 22 points, all on attacks, as well as a whopping 31 receptions and 13 digs. Frances Mordi had 19 points while Lhouiz Ruddao produced 12.

Both teams are now holding 2-2 win-loss records.

Earlier in the day, La Salle remained unscathed after shooting down the Ateneo Blue Eagles in four sets, 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-17, on the strength of Angel Canino’s 21 points.

Lilay del Castillo added 18 points while Amie Provido had 17.

Ana Hermosura carried Ateneo with 18 points, with JLo delos Santos following suit with 15.

The Lady Spikers rose to 4-0, while Ateneo remained winless through four games.

In men’s play, the Tamaraws remained unblemished through four games with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 sweep over the Soaring Falcons, while Ateneo prevented a meltdown against the winless Green Spikers, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 20-25, 15-13.
