Laguna-Dasmariñas scored back-to-back wins on Saturday, April 1, to remain on top of the leaderboard in the first conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) 2023 season held via the online Platform Chess.com.

Laguna-Dasmariñas started the day by escaping with a 11.5-9.5 win against the Magic Mandaluyong Tigers and followed it up with a close 11-10 victory over the Manila Indios Bravos.

The chess team backed by Cavite Fourth District Rep. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga Jr. raised its record to 24 wins and one loss to pace not only the Northern Division but the entire league.

Laguna-Dasmariñas had a shaky start in the blitz category against Manila and trailed at 3-4 after the first seven games.

The team, however, was quick to flip the switch and retaliated with an 8-6 victory in the rapid category to claim the W.

“Our victories against Mandaluyong and Manila were really nerve-wracking. I would like to commend our players, especially the home grown players, for their solid performances in the rapid,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the owners of the Laguna-Dasmariñas franchise.

Trailing Laguna-Dasmariñas in the Northern Division are San Juan (23-2), Pasig (19-6), Manila (14-11), Cavite (14-11), Mandaluyong (13-12), Cagayan (10-15), Rizal (8-17), Isabela (6-19) and Quezon (4-19)

The top three teams in the Southern Division, meanwhile, are Negros Island Region (23-2),

Davao (18-7) and Toledo (17-8). Completing the teams are Camarines-Iriga (13-12), Iloilo (12-13), Surigao (11-14), Zamboanga (9-16), Tacloban (5-20), Mindoro (4-21) and Cebu (2-23).

There are 20 teams competing in the country's first play-for-pay chess league, headed by its president Atty. Paul Elauria and sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

The Laguna-Dasmariñas team is also supported by David Nithyananthan of Kalaro and Greatech Philippines, Engr. Billy Joe Ereňo of Costbusters Philippine Corp., Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods and Jolly Smile Dental Clinic.
