MANILA, Philippines — One of the highlights of the country's hosting of the Honor of Kings International Championship (KIC) was the release of Filipino hero Lapu-Lapu, whose prowess saw a high win rate among the top teams during the tournament.
"Nakakaproud gamitin si Lapu-Lapu and may confidence boost. Medyo may cheat code pero malakas,” said Blacklist International's Charles "Chazz" Esguerra, who used Lapu-Lapu during the match against Malaysia's NOVA Esports.
According to the Honor of Kings development team, Lapu-Lapu’s earliest concepts emerged from extensive research into Filipino literature and historical accounts.
“In the Filipino literary and history work we researched, we felt like we could hear echoes of the Filipino self, the cries of a free people, safeguarding their beliefs. It was in this first place of heroes and legends that we found the offspring of inspiration,” said the team.
Within the Honor of Kings narrative, Lapu-Lapu becomes the mightiest warrior of Nectum, a southern island in Sumeria known for its beauty and rich resources. The developers describe him as “the bravest and the most resolute power in Azuria,” a figure whose strength is tested when Western pirates exploit a neighboring chief to ignite rebellion. Fighting tirelessly but falling into a trap, Lapu-Lapu makes a desperate pact with Bakunawa, the great serpent guardian of the island, gaining the power to command the waves but at the price of eventually turning into stone one day, showing that behind the epic myth lies the vulnerability of a man who fears the destiny tied to his own power.
The team added, "He is a hero, yes, but he is also an ordinary person. We all have our own heart of stone. We can still see the human condition reflected in him."
Lapu-Lapu’s design is equally rooted in Filipino culture, particularly the iconic statue standing in Lapu-Lapu City. His kampilan-inspired weapon symbolizes strength and authority, while his shield, modeled after a traditional kalasag while his clothes were drawn from traditional 14th–15th century attire, with the motifs of stone totems, waves and fish scales symbolizing faith and respect for nature.
To complete his identity, Honor of Kings crafted a soundtrack representing his cultural roots and emotional journey.
“The traditional Filipino cooling tongue sets the tone at the beginning of the piece while the rumbling bass reverberates like the tribe’s cold weapons,” explained the team.
Lapu-Lapu is more than just a playable hero, he is a celebration of Filipino culture and the universal themes found in its stories.
“We hope that the legend of Lapu-Lapu takes you on a journey through time and space and allows you to truly experience this hero’s unique culture and charm. Through him, [players may] experience the wonder that is born at the intersection of history and legend,” added the develepment team.
Lapu-Lapu is now playable in Honor of Kings, with a Tagalog and Bisaya voice pack to be released in January 2026.
