ANG Probinsyano party-list Rep. Alfred de los Santos introduced a measure that lays out a clear path to regular plantilla positions in the government for national coaches and athletes.
De los Santos filed House Bill 4654, also known as “An Act providing for the employment of National Athletes and Coaches as Regular Employees of the Government, thereby securing their salaries and benefits.”
“I filed this bill because I want to promote forward-looking sports policies for our athletes and their coaches,” de los Santos said.
HB 4654 establishes regular employment with corresponding qualifications required and salary grades for national athletes and national coaches.
For their retirement, it also offers a GSIS membership and a monthly priority athlete benefit of P3,000.
Athletes and coaches can also continue working as brand ambassadors and endorsers while they hold public office.
The funding for the bill's implementation will be included in the annual general appropriations that guarantees the compensation and benefits of the modern day national heroes.
“This bill is also named in honor of Asia's fastest woman in the 1980s, Lydia de Vega, who brought glory and prestige to our country in the sport of track and field. She succumbed in her battle against cancer on Aug. 10, 2022,” de los Santos said.
“We commemorate her memory and legacy in the hopes that she will inspire the younger generation to strive for excellence,” he added.
