Lawmakers welcome ‘newest, good additions’ to Marcos Cabinet

SENATORS and members iof the House of Representatives welcomed the “newest and good additions” to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s Cabinet following his appointments of Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. and Teodoro Herbosa as secretaries of the Departments of National Defense and Health respectively.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd said both have prior experience in the field already, “hence, they can hit the ground running.”

Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero said Teodoro and Herbosa are “a good addition” to the Marcos administration.

Sen. Mary Grace Poe said she trusts that their expertise and experience in their respective fields will “help them carry on the gargantuan tasks that lie ahead.”

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said Teodoro and Herbosa were “welcome additions to the President's immediate official family” as “their wealth of experience and knowledge in defense and health strengthen the Marcos Cabinet.”

Iloilo 5th District Rep. Raul “Boboy” Tupas, chairman of the Committee on National Defense and Security, said in a statement that with Teodoro's “extensive experience in leadership and legislation and expertise in legal and administrative aspects, I am confident that the defense and security of our nation are in good hands.”

In a statement, BHW Party-list Rep. Angelica Natasha Co said Herbosa “brings to the Department of Health a wealth of wisdom earned from a long career devoted to healing people, caring for communities, and working with stakeholders of the health sector.”

'Competence, integrity, honesty'

“I know them both personally and have worked with them in the past. Their competence, integrity and honesty is beyond question based on my experience working with them,” Escudero said.

Pimentel said the DND's challenge is the “growing geopolitical tensions especially the one concerning China-Taiwan-US (United States).”

The DoH, the senator said, “has a full plate given the many health problems that Filipinos face.

He said the DoH's “new approach should be 'value for money' and put value in all our resources.”

“Hence, [the] DoH should not be wasteful and value even those items donated to us,” Pimentel said in a text message.

Poe said the new secretaries “are crucial in deciding and implementing strategies in addressing the various health issues we are facing and in upholding the country's territorial integrity against various threats.”

“Focus and commitment on the job coupled with straight and true service will fortify our health and defense sectors and deliver the services our people deserve,” she added.

Teodoro served as Defense secretary before and is a former congressional representative of Tarlac's first district. He holds a master's degree in law from Harvard University.

Herbosa had served as Health undersecretary. Also, he had served as an official of the Philippine General Hospital.
