League of Legends opens 2026 with Demacia-centric season

MANILA, Philippines — League of Legends (LoL) is starting 2026 by heading to the military kingdom of Demacia for the first seasonal update of the year.

Titled "For Demacia", the first patch of the year refreshes gameplay systems, introduces thematic content, and outlines competitive changes for the 2026 LoL esports calendar.

Also known as "The Proud Military Kingdom" in the universe of Runeterra, Demacia holds fast to the ideals of justice, honor, and duty, and is the home of favorite League of Legends champions, Garen, Lux, Lucian and Fiora.

Gameplay changes with the first update of the year are focused on expanding strategic options and improving overall pacing. Role quests now grant unique rewards depending on lane, midlaners gain free tier-three boots and faster recalls, while bot laners receive increased gold income and even a seventh item slot.

Game flow is also faster with shorter Champ Select times and earlier minion and jungle spawns. New features such as Faelights and Crystalline Overgrowth add fresh map dynamics, while Swiftplay and Ranked updates roll out through separate developer blogs.

Season 1 also introduces Demacia Rising, a new meta-game where players grow Demacia from a small settlement into a full kingdom through season-long progression. Motion comics will launch throughout the season to explore the narrative further. A highly anticipated update for Shyvana arrives in Act 2, bringing new visuals for her human and dragon forms while keeping her core abilities largely intact.

There will also be notable changes to the format of League of Legends esports. Starting with First Stand, scheduled this coming March 16-22 in São Paulo, Brazil. The tournament will feature eight teams from major regions competing in best-of-five matches.

This year's Mid-Season Invitational will be hosted in Daejeon, South Korea, while Worlds returns to North America with events in Texas and New York. Competitive play will adopt First Selection, a new system separating side choice from draft order to give teams more flexibility during champion select. Hall of Legends will also return ahead of Worlds with a new inductee.

Besides the updates, Riot Games also announced long-term plans for League of Legends, including a fully integrated new client, a revamped Summoner’s Rift, updated runes and pre-game systems, and an improved new-player experience. More details regarding these long-term plans will be announced between MSI and Worlds later this year.
