MANILA, Philippines — The San Beda Red Lions prevented an 18-point collapse to eke out an 80-76 decision against the Benilde Blazers, to grab solo first spot in Group B of the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball tournament Friday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The Lions led by as much as 18 points in the fourth quarter, before doing just enough to grab the win over the gritty Blazers.
Yukien Andrada growled for the Red Lions with 23 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Bryan Sajonia had 22 markers and four boards.
The Lions, who trailed by nine points early, found their groove and waxed hot as they took a 68-52 lead in the third quarter.
The advantage grew to 18, 70-52, after a jumper by Jimuel Reyes early on in the fourth.
But a massive 21-4 run, capped by a triple by Jake Gaspay, made it a one point game, 73-74, with 1:01 left.
But Sajonia punched in a crucial 3-pointer of his own to keep Benilde at bay, 77-73, with about 39 seconds left.
Tony Ynot, however, answered with a trey of his own to make it a 76-77 ballgame.
Sajonia was then sent to the line, making the first and missing the second. But San Beda was able to coral the rebound anew.
Free throws by Janti Miller iced the game, 80-76, as Ynot’s triple missed.
Miller finished with 11 points, but he struggled from the floor with a 2-of-16 clip.
Ynot carried the offensive load for Benilde with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Shawn Umali had 16 markers and four boards.
San Beda rose to 7-3 in the standings while the Blazers dropped to 6-4.
