Mary Jane Veloso, who was on death row in Indonesia for 14 years, is finally returning to the Philippines.
Arrested and sentenced to death for drug trafficking in 2010, Veloso will be brought home on Wednesday, December 18, following an agreement between the Philippines and Indonesia.
Her homecoming comes after years of diplomatic negotiations and a global campaign to #SaveMaryJane, backed by Filipinos worldwide.

Veloso to undergo 5-day quarantine, 55-day orientation
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Tuesday, December 17, that Mary Jane Veloso will undergo a five-day quarantine as part of protocol at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, where she will be brought upon her arrival in the Philippines on Wednesday, December 18.
This will be followed by “a 55-day orientation, diagnostic evaluation, and initial security classification, after which, she shall be transferred to her assigned corrections facility,” BuCor said.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. is leading the Philippine delegation that will fetch Veloso from Indonesia.
Malacañang confirms Veloso return
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin released the following statement on Monday, December 16:
With much appreciation and gratefulness to the Republic of Indonesia, we confirm the imminent return of our kababayan, Mary Jane Veloso.
Her homecoming is the fruit of more than a decade of persistent discussions, consultations, and diplomacy.
Duty-bound as we are to honor the conditions for her transfer to Philippine jurisdiction, we are truly elated to welcome Mary Jane back to her homeland and family, from whom she has been distanced for too long.
