American Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, after a two-day conclave to choose the new pope.

Taking the name Leo XIV, he is the first pontiff from the United States. He also holds Peruvian citizenship after having served as a missionary in Peru for two decades.

The conclave included 133 cardinals who were eligible to participate in a papal election.

US President Donald Trump told Fox News in an interview broadcast on Wednesday, May 14, that he would like to speak to Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff from the United States.

“He was really a surprise choice,” Trump said in an interview conducted on Monday, May 12, for the network’s Hannity program.
