WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Uwan (Fung-wong), the Philippines’ 21st tropical cyclone for 2025, unleashed torrential rain and destructive winds in Luzon. It made landfall in Aurora as a super typhoon on Sunday, November 9, then was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday, November 10, while crossing the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon.
Even before Uwan slammed into Aurora, it had already been battering many areas, especially Bicol. With a diameter reaching more than 1,800 kilometers at its peak, it affected even the Visayas and Mindanao in varying degrees.
Uwan left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday, November 11, but reentered PAR on Wednesday, November 12, and headed for Taiwan, where it made landfall. It eventually weakened into a low pressure area, then dissipated, on Thursday, November 13.

Relief, reinforcements needed in Catanduanes
Rappler on Wednesday, November 12, spoke with community workers in Catanduanes, most of whom have been restless since Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) ravaged the province. Aside from relief goods, these workers urgently need reinforcements as many have been staying in Pandan’s municipal hall 24/7.
Catanduanons, known for their resilience, can be seen actively helping each other despite experiencing the wrath of Uwan themselves. But with the scale of the damage caused by the super typhoon across many towns, the province needs immediate attention from the national government, aid from everyone who can help, and climate justice to prevent the same scenes from happening each year.
At least 3,500 houses damaged in Pandan, Catanduanes
Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong), described by residents as far worse than 2024’s Typhoon Pepito (Man-yi), has caused catastrophic damage here in Catanduanes.
In the municipality of Pandan alone, the super typhoon heavily damaged at least 3,591 houses, with initial estimated costs soaring over P232 million. This devastation has displaced thousands of residents in the municipality based on the latest vetted data from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as of Wednesday, November 12.
When we reached San Andres and traveled through various towns toward Pandan, we witnessed firsthand the sheer destruction to not only to residential establishments but also the environment itself. Almost all trees we passed were either felled or severely damaged, stripped of their branches and leaves. The province’s agriculture, from bananas and coconuts to all other kinds of crops, was completely obliterated.
When I visited Catanduanes in 2024 after Pepito struck, at least some trees remained lush. Now, several towns are permeated by the heavy smell of fallen leaves and mud, with countless residents helplessly trying to salvage what they can from the ruins of their homes.
