Magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolts Agusan del Norte

A MAGNITUDE 5.5 earthquake shook Agusan del Norte on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs director Teresito “Toto” Bacolcol said the tremor occurred at 5:32 p.m. some 21 kilometers northwest of Nasipit town.

Tectonic in origin, the quake had a depth of 35 kms, Bacolcol told The Manila Times.

The Phivolcs chief said damage to infrastructure was not expected but aftershocks are possible.

Phivolcs said Instrumental Intensity 4 was recorded in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte while Intensity 2 was felt in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

Asked why only instrumental intensities were recorded, Bacolcol said the source of the quake was deep, hence, it was hardly felt on the ground.

“Only our intensity meter has recorded the ground shaking and so far we have not yet received reports from the ground or the residents themselves that they felt the earthquake in their area,” he said.
