Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Jan Thomas Limchua as the latest Papal Chaplain at the Vatican.

He bears the title Monsignor as the Chaplain to His Holiness.

This esteemed designation is an honorary bestowment granted by the Pope for services rendered to the Church. More than a specific position, it gives him certain privileges in ecclesiastical duties and vestments. Under his role, he aids the Holy Father in tasks throughout the city state, as he has officially become part of the Pontifical Family.

The bespectacled, soft-spoken and articulate 36-year-old priest who hails from Cebu City, an alumnus of Sacred Heart School — Ateneo de Cebu, was ordained under the Archdiocese of Cebu in 2010.

Msgr. Limchua took up theological studies at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain and finished his doctorate degree in Canon Law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, Italy.

He had diplomatic formation at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, which is considered as the diplomacy school of the Holy See.

In 2014, he took on the Diplomatic Service in Benin and Togo in West Africa and in Egypt.

Early this year, Msgr. Limchua was appointed by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, His Eminence Pietro Cardinal Parolin, as an official of the Section for the Relations with States of the Holy See. This was his latest post before this new designation.

He joins two other Filipinos who work at the Vatican and are directly in service of the Pope — Cardinal-Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle, who is the Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and was later on appointed as a member of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue and Vincent Lüthi, who is the first Filipino-Swiss to be a part of the prestigious Swiss Guards, an organization established in 1506 whose main role is the protection of the Pope and the Apostolic Palace.
