National Stroke Play Championship: Hernandez, Sarines turn final round into coronation walk

MANILA, Philippines — It would take nothing short of a collapse of historic proportions to deny Jet Hernandez and Lisa Sarines their respective titles.

Displaying the kind of dominance rarely seen in the country's premier amateur championship, Hernandez and Sarines tightened their stranglehold on the National Stroke Play Championship Friday with another pair of impressive performances, stretching their leads to seemingly insurmountable margins and reducing Saturday's final round at Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club in Lubao, Pampanga into little more than a coronation walk.

Hernandez, chasing a second straight championship, capped another masterful day with a birdie-eagle flourish to fire a 69 at Pinatubo and build an overwhelming 18-shot advantage, while Sarines shot the best round of the women's tournament — a three-under card of her own — to blow the ladies race wide open with a commanding 15-stroke cushion.

Even without the dazzling fireworks that marked his opening two rounds of 65-65, Hernandez still found a way to separate himself further from the field.

Starting at No. 10, the 2024 champion traded a bogey and a birdie early before grinding through a string of pars. Standing at even par with two holes remaining, Hernandez once again displayed the poise and finishing kick that have defined his title defense.

He birdied the par-4 eighth before overpowering the par-5 No. 9 with an eagle to transform what appeared headed for a routine round into yet another under-par effort.

While his 69 paled beside his back-to-back seven-under cards, it proved more than enough to swell his overnight 12-shot lead to an astonishing 18 strokes at 17-under 199 after 54 holes.

With just one round left, Hernandez has all but secured a successful title defense in the championship organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines, barring one of the biggest reversals in tournament history.

Just as importantly, the victory would provide the ideal momentum heading into next week's Philippine Amateur Open at Luisita Golf and Country Club, where he will bid to sweep the country's two most prestigious amateur titles as the format shifts from stroke play to match play.

The rest of the field struggled to keep pace on a far more demanding Pinatubo layout.

Overnight runner-up Rolando Bregente limped home with a 75 and slipped to 217, while Jacob Rolida surged with a closing 69 to force a tie for third at 219 alongside Jed Dy, who matched par 72. Chris Remata, meanwhile, stumbled with a 74 and dropped from third to fifth at 221.

Sarines, whose campaign is supported by ICTSI, matched Hernandez's commanding display in her side of the battle, producing her finest round of the week after 70 and 72 to move within touching distance of her first National Stroke Play crown.

Protecting a seven-shot lead entering the day, Sarines wasted little time tightening her grip on the championship, birdieing three of her first four holes after starting on No. 10 to pull away from the field.

Although she briefly stumbled with a bogey on the 16th, she answered with another birdie on the very next hole before turning in 37.

She continued to showcase remarkable composure on the inward nine. After dropping another shot on No. 3, she responded with consecutive birdies on Nos. 4 and 5. Even when back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7 threatened to slow her momentum, Sarines delivered one final statement, birdieing the closing hole for a 37-32 card and a 54-hole total of five-under 211.

Her steady ball-striking, timely recoveries and refusal to allow mistakes to linger proved too much for the chasing pack, allowing her to pad her lead from seven strokes to a massive 15 over Tashanah Balangauan.

Balangauan struggled to a 77 for a 226 total, while Precious Zaragosa also faded with a 77 to fall further back at 231.

Jules Gaerlan carded a 77 to move into a three-way tie for fourth at 237 with Crista Miñoza and Johanna Uyking, who returned rounds of 78 and 79, respectively.

With both Hernandez and Sarines holding runaway leads entering the final 18 holes, the championship races have effectively turned into victory marches, leaving only the formalities before two of Philippine amateur golf's hottest players complete dominant wire-to-wire triumphs.
