Four members of the New People’s Army, including a ranking leader, were killed when troops clashed with the rebel group in Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, early Monday, the military said.
“We have initial information that one of them is a top-ranking leader, but we are still conducting further verification,” said Capt. Jayrald Ternio, Army 2nd Infantry Division spokesman.
Of the four, one was a female and the three were males, he added.
According to Ternio, soldiers encountered more or less 20 rebels in Sitio Surong, Brgy. Aguas, around 6 a.m.
The firefight lasted for about 30 minutes, before the other rebels withdrew, leaving four of their slain comrades, he said.
No casualties were reported among the troops, who also recovered six M16-A1 rifles, an M653 rifle, and an M14 rifle, Ternio said.
