Obiena snares bronze in Poland

(UPDATE) ERNEST John “EJ” Obiena cleared 5.72 meters (m) to claim a bronze medal in the Memorial Irena Szewinska in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Wednesday, June 7 (Manila time).

The 27-year-old Filipino Olympian tried to clear 5.82 m but failed in three attempts.

Before acing his season best 5.72 m in just one try, Obiena also cleared 5.62 in one attempt only.

World No. 3 Obiena finished behind world No. 2 Chris Nilsen of the United States of America and home bet Piotr Lisek.

Nilsen grabbed the gold medal with a 5.92-m clearance while Lisek claimed the silver with a 5.82-m vault.

This Poland meet was Obiena's first competition since the 32nd Southeast Asian Games last month in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

There, Obiena reset the meet record with a 5.65-m clearance to seize his third straight gold medal despite the rainy conditions.

Obiena will next compete in the Bergen Jump Challenge on June 10 in Norway and in the Oslo Bislett Games on June 15 in the same country.
