Other Filipinos join Biado in Round of 32 at 8-ball worlds

MANILA, Philippines — Carlo Biado will not be alone in the country’s hunt for that World Men’s 8-Ball Championship crown.

Jeffrey de Luna, Sean Mark Malayan, Roberto Gomez and Lee Van Corteza survived elimination and hurdled their respective foes in the loser’s round to join Biado in the heated title race in St. Louis, Missouri Saturday.

Knowing one more loss would mean outright exit, De Luna blanked Briton Darren Appleton, 8-0; Malayan bested Estonian Karl Gnadeberg, 8-5; Gomez won via forfeiture over South African Joseph Aden; and Van Corteza trounced Guatemalan Luis Lemus, 8-5, to live for another day.

De Luna, Malayan, Gomez and Van Corteza were battling Kiwi Sullivan Clark, German Joshua Filler, Pole Radoslaw Babica and Finish Arseni Sevastyanov, respectively, as of this writing for a chance to make it to the Round of 32.

Biado had an easier path as he was the lone Filipino to make it to the winner’s round after hurdling Lithuanian Pijus Labutis, 8-3, Friday, and was battling Skyler Woodward also being fought Sunday.
