National officers of the Cusi-wing PDP Laban on Tuesday filed a petition before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) asking the poll body to declare the officers of the faction of Senators Koko Pimentel and Manny Pacquiao as “illegitimate.”
The COMELEC is expected to resolve the conflict in the PDP Laban after both factions submitted their own sets of officers and as they expected to field their candidates for the 2022 May elections.
The filing of certificate of candidacy (COC) will start next month.
On 17 July, members of the national assembly elected Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as the new party president, effectively removing Sen. Manny Pacquiao from the position.
The Cusi-wing party election was presided by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte, who is the party chairman.
Aside from Cusi, lawyer Melvin Matibag and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles were elected as secretary general and executive vice president, respectively.
Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez was named the vice president (VP) for the National Capital Region; Raul Lambino as VP for Luzon; Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone as VP for Visayas; and PEZA Director-General Charito Plaza as VP for Mindanao.
Also elected were Palayan City Mayor Rianne Cuevas as the national treasurer, while Senator Christopher “Bong” Go is the new auditor general.
Astravel Naik, Noel Felongco, Antonio Kho, and Richard Nethercot now hold the positions of chairpersons for membership, education, finance, and legal committees, respectively.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, Reymar Mansilungan, and Atty. Maria Katrina Nicole Contacto were named the chairpersons for public information, livelihood, and youth affairs committees, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Pimentel-Pacquaio-wing in August elected Pimentel and replaced Duterte as party chairman, while the boxer-lawmaker as party president.
Former governor of Eastern Samar Lutgardo Barbo was elected as party vice chairman.
The meeting was attended by what Pimentel said were grassroots leaders.
Matibag called it “comedy” and emphasized that Duterte will remain as PDP Laban party chair while describing the other group as “pretenders” and “attention seekers.”
The Cusi faction is endorsing Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go and Duterte as the party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates, respectively, while the Pimentel wing is reportedly supporting Pacquiao’s potential presidential run.
