Alexa Larrazabal defeated fellow Filipino Claire Dinoy to take home the bronze medal at the Southeast Asian Fencing Federation Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday, Jan. 6.
Larrazabal finished third in the senior women’s epee event sharing the spot with Pham Huyen Trang of Vietnam while Trang’s fellow Vietnamese Vu Thi Hong finished behind Anthea Foong of Singapore who captured the gold.
Larrazabal advanced to the Round of 16 with an easy opening-round bye before edging Dinoy, 15-12, to guarantee her podium finish.
Meanwhile, Hanniel Abella landed at the sixth spot after successively routing both Xin Mynn Ho and Bee Hui Goh of Malaysia.
Princess Arbilon, who finished in seventh, prevailed over Denise Seah of Singapore before defeating Vietnamese Phuong Kim Nguyen in a close encounter, 13-12.
The day prior, Noelito Jose Jr. and Wilhelmina Lozada captured gold medals in the senior men’s epee event and senior women’s foil, respectively.
