MANILA, Philippines – The weather bureau announced the end of the 2025 southwest monsoon or habagat season in the Philippines on Tuesday, October 7.
In a statement, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted that the southwest monsoon, characterized by warm and moist winds, has been weakening in the past few weeks.
“Moreover, a gradual change of the country’s weather pattern has been observed due to the strengthening of the high pressure system over East Asia and the southward migration of the intertropical convergence zone…. With these developments, the habagat season has officially ended,” PAGASA said.
This also means that the rainy season in the western parts of Luzon and the Visayas is over.
The Philippines’ transition to the northeast monsoon or amihan season, also called the cool and dry season, is underway.
PAGASA said the start of the northeast monsoon season will be declared “in the coming weeks.” It typically lasts from October to February or March, causing surges of cool temperatures.
The northeast monsoon also brings rain to the eastern side of the country. – Rappler.com
